Maureen and Ian tipped us off to the Hundertwasser Toilets in Kawakawa. How much destiny in a name? Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) was an Austrian-born Jew. His artistic reaction to the Third Reich was to avoid as much as possible rectangular shapes, which he associated with marching columns of soldiers. (Several more photos over on Flickr…) Recycled materials are used throughout, and the roof is planted with plants displaced by the construction.
