Down the west coast from Ahipara

DSC_0964Why is a 55-mile-long beach called “The 90-mile beach“?  I don’t know, but it runs from the northernmost tip down the west (Tasman Sea) side of NZ.  The waves are typically much more intense than on the east coast.

We headed down the coast, and caught a ferry…

…on our way to perhaps the most famous tree in NZ: Tane Mahuta is a kauri–about 2000 years old–which lives on in the Waipoua forest reserve.
